The Horticulture Cooperative Union of Malawi (HORTCUM) is an umbrella
organization of primary horticulture cooperatives in Malawi. It was registered in Malawi on 10th July 2008
under the provisions of the Cooperative Societies Act Cap 47.02 of the Laws of Malawi. It was established
with financial and technical assistance from the African Development Bank through the Horticulture and Food
Crops Development Project (HFCDP) implemented by the Department of Irrigation of the Ministry of Agriculture,
Irrigation and Water Development from 2000 to 2008.
It was established as an exit strategy to continue with the utilization of and sustain the outputs and the
benefits to the smallholder farmer beneficiaries that the project left behind. One of the recommendations in
the HFCDP Completion Report (PCR) alluded to that fact that HORTCUM had to be established as a farmer owned
institution that would spearhead the development of the horticulture industry in Malawi.
HORTCUM membership is made up of primary cooperatives. HORTCUM currently has 20 primary cooperatives that are
registered with HORTCUM. Over 30 farmer groups have shown inte
Nutrition, food and income security for Malawi economic growth through Horticulture.
In order to satisfy the needs of our customers, Hortcum will engage its primary cooperatives
